Sanctuary dedicated 1927 - Christian Education Building built 1965

OUR MISSION: The purpose of this church organization shall be, as revealed in the New Testament, to win people to faith in Jesus Christ and commit them actively to Church, to help them grow in grace and knowledge of Christ that increasingly they may know and do His will, and to work for the unity of all Christians and with them engage in the common task of building the Kingdom of God.

First Christian Church (DOC) - Ashland NE;
Some of the congregation's history:

R.C. (Robert Clark) Barrow and  D. R. (David Roberts) Dungan, prominent evangelists of the early 1880's, were instrumental in establishing this congregation; known then as the Ashland Christian Church in 1883;
later to renamed the First Christian Church of Ashland (NE). (1961)
(See name(s) change information below.)

The officers listed at the dedication of the new building (April 1885) were:

The minister was David Hustand

The opinion of many is that the most outstanding service was rendered by Rev. C. A. Huyck,  who remained steadfast through many difficult years of the Church's life. Reverend Huyck was identified with the congregation from 1891 unitl his death in 1914.  During that time he rendered uninterrupted service either as Adult Bible Class teacher or Pastor of the the Church.

The following ministers have served the Church with distinction and honor:

Rev. J. Milton Bryarly began his service as Interim Pastor on 23 September 2007.

The Church has been served by many noble women during her time:

The Ladies Aid Society was organized in 1896, with Mrs. F.E Marcy as first president. Her term of office lasted 10 years. During this time, the ladies bought the property and home just west of the church, presenting this gift to the congregation for their minister. This home became the first parsonage.
(no record is currently available as to when that parsonage was actually constructed, however, we do know that it was purchased on March 31, 1902 from Mr. & Mrs. Walter J. (Katharine) Waltmire by the Board of Trustees of the Church of Christ (previous name of First Christian Church) for the sum of 1,500.00.
The home was sold 58 years later to Gail Smith for $575.00. It was moved over 4 blocks, in order to make room for the planned new Christian Education building. The home was renovated and the 1983 resident was Wayne Decker. The home is still occupied today as a residence at 1717 Furnas Street.)

Mrs. J.M. Moss followed Mrs. Marcy as president. She served for 16 years. Many other women served shorter terms.

The Women's Missionary Society was organized April 9, 1891 by Mrs. W.A. Collins, state secretary. The officers chosen were Mrs. A.P. Camp, president; Mrs. C.W. Fuller, vice-president; Miss Addie Marsh, secretary; and Mrs. F.W. Murphy, treasurer.

The Society has rendered a great service to the church by emphasizing the world-wide call of evangelism.

The Aid Society and the Missionary Society functioned as separate organizations until 1932; when they merged under the name of Women's Council. Mrs. Dean Mac Farlane was first president.

In June of 1950, it voted to change the name to Christian Women's Fellowship, as it is known today. Mrs. Josephine Ziegenbein was the first president; Mrs. Flora Olson was recording secretary.

Early 1956 - Sanctuary remodeled:
Paul Wild and Richard Goings built the new alter railing and new steps to the platform.

NAME CHANGE of our church:
A Quit Claim Deed, dated June 16, 1961, changed the name(s) of the owner of the Church of Christ of Ashland - also known as the Church of Christ of Saunders County, Nebraska to the First Christian Church of Ashland (NE).

July 18,1971 - New organ and PA system
Rev. Ronald Irons presided over the dedication of the new public address system and the new Conn electronic organ - both replacing older equipment.

2006: Covering & preservation of the historic stained glass windows was completed.

2008: The former Perry Couch property, just west of the church, was purchased. The home was donated and razed by the Ashland Fire Department on June 7th as a training exercise, to make room for more parking and later expansion.

Fathers Day - June 15, 2008: 2 beautiful silver flower vases, a memorial gift in memory of the late Jack Williams, were received and dedicated from the Brenda Williams family.

Buildings that have served the FCC:

Another view of original building: circa 1920-1925
Note: the "original" parsonage is pictured to the left side
of the the church photo (below).

 Our first church building:
This little band of Christians met in different homes or other available places until 1884, when they decided to build a church building; which was dedicated by D.R. Lucas in April 1885. The building's cost was $2,908.00.

The building was used for Church and Bible School until 1911; when it became too small for the Bible School. So, a wing was added to the west side. The wing was dedicated January 7, 1912, by Charles Cobbey. Bert Wilson was the minister.

CHURCH DISCOVERED IN FLAMES
At 3:45 am, May 17, 1925, the church was discovered in flames. In less than thirty minutes the sacred and tender memories of almost half a century were gone up in smoke. The building and furnishings, valued at more than $15,000 were a total loss. It was covered by only $2,000.00 of insurance. That same afternoon the members met in the Methodist Church and discussed plans for rebuilding. After prayerful consideration the members voted unanimously to rebuild.

A new Sanctuary - following the 1925 fire:
A building committee was established the same day in a congregational meeting held at the Methodist church. The committee was chaired by Ed Hoffman. Other members were Earl Chamberlin, L.C. Raikes, Ralph Dean, W.H. Blair and E. R. King.

REBUILDING from the ashes
A contract to rebuild was signed June 28, 1926. Ground was broken on July 4, 1926. The cornerstone was laid October 31, 1926,
(We have learned that Mr. Chamberlain lived "just up Boyd street from the church" & was
an active member until his passing in January of 1973, according to Rev. Phillip L. Hayes)

During the two year construction period, the congregation met in the old Opera House, located over business establishments housed in the that building; located on the southeast corner of 15th and Silver Street. (The NAPA Auto Parts store - 2008) This was due to the generosity of the owner, Carl Panzer. The new church was dedicated April 3, 1927, at a cost of $33,582.25.

A new parsonage - 1956:
The "old parsonage" (constructed sometime after 1896) showed the ravages of time; so members decided to build a new one. Accordingly, land was purchased just across the street; where a house was built almost entirely of donated labor. This was in the summer of 1956. The cost of the lot and material was $10,400. This new parsonage was dedicated Febraury 3, 1957. The first residents of the new parsonage were Pastor B.F. (and his wife, Myrtle) Parnell.

The need for a larger parsonage arose and the congregation purchased a home at 307 N 27th street in the 1980's, which has served as the parsonage since.

NEW Christian Education Unit building
In the early 1950's it had become apparent that more Sunday School space was needed. As a result of this, the Crusader's Class (young adults); several of whom were parents of young children, did more than talk about getting that extra space. They began a Building Fund of their own - adding to it each Sunday. Over $3,200 was collected by this class.

As near as it can be determined, it was prior to April 8, 1956, when they started their building fund. In February, 1958, the first money was deposited with the Board of Church Extension at the Indianapois headquarters of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This fund grew until July 1965, when there was $27,834 in the Building Fund; the amount necessary before a contract could be let. Excavating began on June 12, 1965 for the long planned Educational Unit.   Building progressed at a slow pace - due to an enormous amount of rain during the summer.

Nevertheless, on January 9, 1966 the Nursery and Beginner's Departments began moving into their newly assigned quarters in the new unit.
The approximate cost of the Christian Education Unit building: $51,557.00 - plus interest on a loan of $21,000. Additionally, there was the cost of a full kitchen - $4,169 - which was paid for by the Christian Women's Fellowship.
